The Master of Taxation (MTax) is a specialist qualification in Australian tax law, drawing upon the Sydney Law School's Taxation program, one of the world's most respected and established. It is a postgraduate degree designed to equip Australian or international law graduates with knowledge of Australian tax law. Participants come from diverse backgrounds in Australia and overseas, including recent graduates and established practitioners. They come from professional firms and industry, the private sector and government. The program will develop your professional knowledge and skills by choosing elective units that match your interests, with an option to complete an independent research project.


Teaching:

The Tax Program is taught by academics and practitioners who are internationally recognised leaders in their fields, supported by renowned international visitors. Domestic practitioners and international visitors teach 60 percent of the program.


Careers:

This course is designed to meet the needs of those in the Australian tax profession, whether as lawyers, accountants, public administrators or academics, who wish to build on their experience and attain a high level of specialist tax expertise.


Other:

Seminars, courses and units of study offered under Sydney Law School's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program meet the requirements for individual members of the Law Society of New South Wales or the New South Wales Bar Association to maintain legal registration through continuing education. Sydney Law School's taxation units also meet the CPD requirements of the Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand.

  • A bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney, or an equivalent qualification and evidence of two years of relevant professional experience.
  • Prerequisites:
  • Students are assumed to have an understanding of Australian income taxation law commensurate with that which would be obtained from completing undergraduate study in Australian taxation law or five years working with Australian taxation law in a law or accounting practice, in an industry role or in the Australian Taxation Office.
  • You may need to provide evidence of your English proficiency to study with us.
