Program Outline

Degree Overview:

Our Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Science (Genomics and Precision Medicine) is designed to meet the rapidly growing demand in biomedical science for graduates who are skilled in state-of-the-art omic techniques and who are versed in the language of genetics. This program is suitable for recent science and health graduates as well as established scientists or clinicians who want to advance their careers in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases.

Outline:

The Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Science (Genomics and Precision Medicine) comprises 24 credit points of subjects, including two 6 credit point core units in Clinical Laboratory Science and Genomics, Omics and Medical Applications. The course has a mandatory face-to-face core unit. Students will also complete 12 credit points of stream selective units spanning Cancer and Pathogen Genomics, Disease Diagnosis and Treatment, and Genomics in Clinical Practice.

Teaching:

The program is directed by Professor Scott Byrne. Students will learn in a variety of environments including innovative new teaching and learning spaces, teaching and research laboratories, immersive clinical environments and online.

Careers:

Graduates from our Graduate Certificate in Biomedical Science (Genomics and Precision Medicine) will have advanced knowledge of genetic medicine, research literature and genomic techniques. They will be able to reflect critically and incorporate genomic and precision medicine knowledge and skills into their practice or research; adopting an evidence-based approach in clinical and research laboratories, and in non-clinical settings.

Other:

The program is offered at the Westmead Health Precinct in Sydney. The course is predominantly online or mostly online, with no more than one third of required units of study offered in face-to-face mode. Students will develop deep expertise in genetics and ‘omics relevant to all areas of medicine which have significant impact on clinical management including cancer, infectious diseases, neurology, cardiology, nephrology, ophthalmology and other subspecialty areas in paediatrics, obstetrics and adult care. The University of Sydney is ranked top 20 university globally (QS World University Rankings 2024) and 2nd in Australia and 25th globally for medicine (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023). Students will study the latest techniques, developments and breakthroughs in genetic and proteomic technology especially with relevance to clinical care.
