Program Outline
Degree Overview:
Our Graduate Certificate in Surgical Sciences aims to help students develop the knowledge and skills needed in surgical specialty areas as well as non-technical areas such as professionalism, leadership and research. This course provides an early pathway for senior medical students (years 3 or 4) or medical graduates to undertake study in preparation for the Generic Surgical Science Examination (GSSE) conducted by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).
Outline:
The Graduate Certificate in Surgical Sciences requires the completion of 24 credit points of surgery selective units of study. Advanced medical students enrolled in graduate medical programs who have completed their preclinical science studies, would be able to enrol in 1 unit of study (6 credit point per unit of study) per semester and complete the graduate certificate at the same time as completing their medical program. They would also have the option of applying their 24 credit points towards the Master of Surgery in place of the Graduate Certificate in Surgical Sciences.
Teaching:
This course is offered through our interactive online learning environment, giving you the flexibility to tailor your study schedule around your lifestyle. We provide thoughtful, structured online learning that will influence your practice by enhancing your understanding of evidence-based medicine and improving your clinical decision making.
Careers:
The course will provide a mechanism that will enable advanced medical students who want to pursue a career in surgery to articulate their medical studies with a concurrent graduate certificate in surgical sciences.
Other:
The course is 6 months full-time (Available part-time) and is not available to student visa holders. The course comprises units of study that are predominantly online or mostly online, with no more than one third of required units of study offered in face-to-face mode.
