Program Overview

Degree Overview:

The MSc Chemical Research program at the University of Reading prepares students for careers in research and development or for a PhD. The program provides students with specialist and theoretical knowledge in their chosen area of chemistry. Students will gain practical and theoretical research training in their specialist area of chemistry with guidance from an experienced researcher.


Outline:

The main component of the program is a one-year research project. In addition to this, students will also take two taught modules in subjects that complement their project.


Teaching:

Students will receive hands-on training using instrumentation in the state-of-the-art Chemical Analysis Facility, which features NRM, X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, thermal analysis, electron microscopy, and molecular spectroscopy.


Careers:

Many graduates from this degree course go on to pursue a career in Research and Development. Overall, 89% of graduates from Chemistry are in work or further study within 15 months of graduation; of those in full-time employment, 93% are in graduate-level roles.

The program has strong links with international companies including AstraZeneca, BP, Cytec, DuPont, GlaxoSmithKline, Henkel, Johnson Matthey, Pfizer, Proctor & Gamble, Syngenta, and Unilever. 100% of the program's research is of international standing (Research Excellence Framework [REF] 2021, combining 4 , 3 , and 2 submissions – Chemistry) and 100% of the program's research impact has been classed ‘outstanding’ or ‘very considerable’ (REF 2021, combining 4 and 3 submissions – Chemistry).
