Program Outline
The program aims to develop students' illustration skills, such as visual storytelling, visual mediation, observation, creative thinking, and image making, which are highly sought-after in the industry. Graduates will be equipped to play an active creative role in social and environmental change-making processes.
Outline:
The MA Illustration program is a 12-month full-time or 24-month part-time program that includes the following modules:
- Sequence and Series
- Design Methods and Contexts
- Practice Through Partnership
- Master's Project: Illustration
Assessment:
Students' progress is assessed through self-directed visual projects, which include extended written project proposals, developmental and final visual work, a reflective commentary, and an academic report of 3000 words. The Master's Project allows students to build on all previous modules to design a visual project that demonstrates mastery of their subject.
Teaching:
The program is taught by a team of practicing designers, design researchers, and artists who provide guidance and support to students. Students have access to dedicated studio spaces, specialist facilities such as animation suites, film and photography studios, a printmaking workshop, and the Futures Lab. The program emphasizes practice-based learning through live projects, workshops, and collaborations with external partners.
Careers:
Graduates of the MA Illustration program are prepared for careers as freelance illustrators and creative consultants. They can work in various fields, including self-publishing, book and magazine illustration, in-house media and creative teams, advertising, games and animation, communication agencies, and freelance or in-house creative consultancy. The program also provides skills that are useful in other fields, such as teaching and creative management.

- Students have access to a dedicated base studio, as well as specialist facilities such as animation suites, film and photography studios, a printmaking workshop, and the Futures Lab.
- The program offers the guidance and structure to self-organize a degree show, which showcases students' work and demonstrates their project management abilities.
- Students collaborate and discuss their work with staff, external partners, visiting professionals, and fellow students, providing valuable feedback and networking opportunities.
