Program Overview

The PhD program in Dynamic Molecular Cell Biology at the University of Bristol combines cellular, structural, and in vivo approaches to train students in advanced research techniques. The program provides three rotational lab projects in the first year, covering cell culture, disease/model organism research, and molecular techniques. Students benefit from expert faculty guidance, full funding by the Wellcome Trust, and career opportunities in research, medicine, education, and beyond.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This PhD program in Dynamic Molecular Cell Biology brings together the expertise of over 30 internationally recognized molecular cell biologists. It provides training in a wide range of cell biology, structural biology, and in vivo topics and techniques.

Outline:

In the first year, students will have the opportunity to study a range of research topics with different supervisors and undertake three ten-week lab-based research projects:

  • The first rotation will be in a cellular lab, where students will gain experience in cell culture and standard wide-field/confocal cell imaging alongside super-resolution imaging.
  • The second will be in a disease/model organism lab to extend their skills into in vivo applied context and in techniques such as multiphoton imaging.
  • The third will be in a molecular lab enabling them to become familiar with in vitro biochemical and biophysical methods.

Teaching:

The program is taught by a team of over 30 internationally recognized molecular cell biologists. The teaching methods include lectures, seminars, workshops, and laboratory-based research projects.

Careers:

The majority of graduates go on to perform post-doctoral research in world-leading laboratories in the UK, Europe, and the US. Amongst many other things, some students have taken graduate-level entry to study medicine, entered teacher training programs, or trained to become patent lawyers.

Other:

  • The program is fully funded by the Wellcome Trust.
  • International students are welcome to apply.
  • The University of Bristol is ranked fifth for research in the UK (Times Higher Education).
  • 94% of our research assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent.
