About Program

Program Overview

The PG Diploma in Applied Neuropsychology is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time program providing students with core skills and knowledge in clinical neuropsychology, aligning with British Psychological Society guidelines. Through a combination of lectures, seminars, and clinical tutorials, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of neuropsychological disorders, assessment methods, and rehabilitation techniques, preparing them for further clinical training or research careers. Graduates may qualify for retrospective recognition by the BPS, reducing time and expenses towards specialist registration.

Program Outline

The PG Diploma in Applied Neuropsychology is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time program that provides students with the core skills and knowledge related to the theory and practice of clinical neuropsychology. The program is delivered in partnership with North Bristol NHS Trust and covers content dictated by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Objectives:

  • To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of neuropsychological disorders and pathologies
  • To develop students' skills in neuropsychological assessment, formulation, and rehabilitation
  • To prepare students for further clinical training or research careers in neuropsychology

Program Description:

The program consists of six taught units:

  • Applied Clinical Neuropsychology and Principles of Neuropsychological Assessment
  • Functional Neuroanatomy and Neuroscience Methods and Issues in Neuropsychology
  • Theoretical and Clinical Neuropsychology
  • Development and Rehabilitation
  • Evidence Based Neuropsychology
  • Case Study

Outline:

Program Content:

The program covers a range of topics in neuropsychology, including:

  • Neuropsychological disorders and pathologies
  • Principles of neuropsychological assessment
  • Neuroanatomy
  • Neuroscience methods
  • Theories of brain function
  • Rehabilitation techniques

Course Schedule:

The program is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, and clinical tutorials. Lectures and seminars are typically held once a week during term time.

Individual Modules:

  • Applied Clinical Neuropsychology and Principles of Neuropsychological Assessment: This module covers a range of common neuropsychological disorders and also considers the principles of patient assessment and interpretation of neuropsychological tests.
  • Functional Neuroanatomy and Neuroscience Methods and Issues in Neuropsychology: This module has two components.
  • The first component considers a range of neuroscientific techniques and their utility in understanding brain function and dysfunction. The second component covers a range of issues frequently encountered in clinical neuropsychology, such as pain and cognition, PTSD, performance validity testing, and functional neurological disorders.
  • Theoretical and Clinical Neuropsychology: This module covers theories of brain function (for example, emotion and cognition, language, ageing) and also considers the interface between clinical neuropsychology and other allied disciplines (such as neurosurgery, clinical imaging).
  • Development and Rehabilitation: This module considers a range of rehabilitation techniques and places these in the context of the recovery journey.
  • Evidence Based Neuropsychology: This module involves critical reviews of peer-reviewed papers.
