About Program

Program Overview

The program offers a holistic curriculum combining technical training in quantum information and quantum technologies with specialized training in entrepreneurship, project management, and communication skills. Graduates of the program are prepared for a wide range of careers in academia, industry, and government in the rapidly growing QIST sector. The program is fully funded and offers opportunities for professional development, including internships and secondments.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Quantum Information Science and Technologies (QIST) program is a postgraduate training and development experience for those seeking a career in the quantum information science and technologies sector. It supports both fundamental and applied research that will enable new forms of computation, sensing, and communications that address major societal challenges. The program disrupts the tradition of training PhD graduates for academic careers. At the core of the program, students receive cutting-edge training in experimental and theoretical quantum information and quantum technologies. Additionally, students receive specialized training in entrepreneurship, project management, collaborative working, academic practice, science policy, and communication skills. This holistic program hones students' ability to work effectively in diverse teams with peers from varied backgrounds in physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and computer science. The first year of the program is a balance of taught courses, seminars, workshops, and group and independent research projects, with both theoretical and practical aspects. This training offers a first-class foundation for developing and completing a PhD project with a wide range of academic and non-academic supervisors and partners. The cohort approach to learning creates an environment that is both stimulating and empowering. It also supports the creation, growth, and development of personal and professional networks from the first day, broadening students' technical understanding and enabling them to put their research into context.

Teaching:

The QIST program is taught by a team of world-leading researchers from the University of Bristol and the University of Sussex. The program's teaching methods include lectures, seminars, workshops, and group and independent research projects. The program also features a strong emphasis on hands-on experience, with students having access to state-of-the-art research facilities.

Careers:

The QIST program prepares students for a wide range of careers in the quantum information science and technologies sector. Graduates of the program have gone on to work in academia, industry, and government. Some of the potential career paths for QIST graduates include:

  • Quantum computing
  • Quantum communications
  • Quantum sensing and metrology

Other:

The QIST program is a four-year doctoral program. The program is fully funded for UK/Overseas students, covering fees, a travel budget, and a stipend. The program also offers a range of opportunities for students to develop their professional skills, including internships, secondments, and workshops.

UK: full-time£4,758 per year Overseas: full-time£26,000 per year For programmes that last longer than one year, please budget for up to an 8% increase in fees each year.
