Program Overview

This PhD program in Aerosol Science trains experts in the study of airborne particles, focusing on their impact on various fields such as drug delivery, disease transmission, and climate change. Through cohort-based training, research projects, and transdisciplinary competencies, graduates develop a deep understanding of aerosol science and its applications in industry, academia, and beyond.

Program Outline

Aerosol Science is the study of airborne particles ranging from nanometers to millimeters in size. This field has gained significant attention in recent years due to its role in the transmission of COVID-19 and its impact on air quality, respiratory health, and climate.

Objectives:

The PhD program in Aerosol Science aims to train agile experts who can work at the boundaries of disciplines where aerosols play a role. Graduates will possess a deep understanding of aerosol science and its applications in various fields, including drug delivery, disease transmission, materials engineering, combustion, air quality, and climate change.

Outline:

Year 1:

  • Cohort-based training in aerosol science at the University of Bristol
  • Taught program covering:
  • Core Aerosol Science (two units, each of 30 credit points)
  • Computational and data tools (20 credit points)
  • Impact and translation (20 credit points)
  • Environment and communication (20 credit points)
  • Transdisciplinary and Context-Based Learning (60 credit points)

Year 2 and 3:

  • PhD research project
  • Placement hosted by the industrial partner supporting the project

Teaching:

  • Training provided by academic supervisors from the eight participating universities and partners from industry and government organizations
  • Team-based learning approach
  • Emphasis on transdisciplinary competencies

Careers:

Graduates of the program will be equipped to pursue careers in various fields where a knowledge of aerosol science is important, including:

  • Drug delivery
  • Disease transmission
  • Materials engineering
  • Combustion
  • Air quality
  • Climate change
  • Consumer and agricultural products

Other:

  • The program is funded through the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Aerosol Science.
  • Successful candidates will receive a studentship covering Research Training and Support Grant, tuition fees, and a stipend paid at the standard UKRI rate.
