Program Overview


The Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis provides intensive training in quantitative and qualitative research methods, research design, and data collection and measurement. Led by an internationally renowned faculty, the program offers both in-person and online courses over three two-week sessions. Participants enhance their skills through presentations from experts, networking opportunities, and access to necessary software.

The Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis offers intensive social science methods training with instruction from an internationally renowned faculty.

  • Content: Courses cover various types of quantitative and qualitative research methods, research design, techniques for data collection and measurement as well as mathematics.
  • Structure: The core Summer School consists of three two-week sessions:
  • Session One: Tuesday 9 July – Friday 19 July 2024
  • Session Two: Monday 22 July – Friday 2 August 2024
  • Session Three: Monday 5 August – Friday 16 August 2024
  • Course Schedule: Courses are 35 hours over 2 weeks unless otherwise stated.
  • Each course consists of three and a half hours of teaching per day. Participants are advised to calculate additional time for readings and homework.

Teaching:

  • Methods: In-person courses are held at the Colchester campus.
  • Online courses are taught via Zoom. Hybrid courses are available for study either in person or online.
  • Faculty: The Summer School provides instruction from an internationally renowned faculty, drawn from the world’s top research institutions.
  • Unique Approaches: The Summer School offers an intensive learning environment.
  • Along with courses, there are opportunities to enhance students’ experience outside of the classroom, including presentations from internationally renowned experts in social science methodology as part of the Speaker Series, as well as opportunities to network with fellow participants.

Other:

  • The Summer School has been operating since 1967 and has served as a connection between social science communities throughout the world.
  • Each year, over 500 students from all social science disciplines from over 50 countries participate.
  • Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops for in-person courses.
  • Participants must have access to their own computing facilities for online courses, including a laptop or desktop PC, adequate audio and visual equipment, and a reliable internet connection.
  • Participants should have the background knowledge necessary to follow a course.
  • Participants can refresh and enhance their mathematics knowledge in an intensive course, Mathematics for Social Scientists, which is provided free of charge.
  • Instructors reserve the right to exclude a participant who does not have the required background knowledge.
  • The language of instruction is English.
  • Participants will have access to the necessary software to participate in their course, along with other materials, as part of the course fees.
  • Live online class meetings will be recorded and made available to enrolled students during and for a limited period after the course concludes, unless otherwise noted.
  • ECTS Course credit will still be available for courses when taking the Single Course Exam.
