Program Overview


This Bachelor of Music program with a concentration in Music Education and Instrumental Option trains students to become certified music teachers for grades K-12. The curriculum includes music theory, history, performance, and pedagogy, along with general education courses. Graduates are prepared to teach all aspects of music, including instrumental instruction.

  • Students with previous keyboard experience may test out of MU 150 and use the one credit for an elective.
  • Major instrument; two semesters each year, except Senior year only take one semester.
  • Students must participate in an ensemble during each semester in which they are enrolled in MU 272A-MU 272V, and MU 472A-MU 472V.
  • At least once during the program of study, this must be achieved by taking MU 408 or through another small ensemble experience. Wind and percussion majors must take MU 204 twice during their four year program.
  • Wind and percussion majors take MU 420; string majors take MU 421.
  • Select enough elective credits to bring the program total to a minimum of 120 credits, of which at least 42 must be upper-division (300- to 400-level).
  • A minimum grade of C is required in all music courses used to satisfy the requirements of the BM in Music, Music Education Concentration, Instrumental Option.
  • Music majors concentrating in music education must also complete all required education courses with a minimum grade of C.
