Program Outline

The program emphasizes the development of research, technical, and conceptual skills, including:

  • Vocabulary and best practices: Students learn the universal language of clothes and industry standards.
  • Primary research: Students engage in in-depth research to inform their design choices.
  • Diverse aesthetic styles: Students explore various aesthetic styles to create compelling characters.
  • Collaborative artistry: Students understand the role of the costume designer and technician as a collaborative artist, creative visionary, and working professional.

Objectives:

In addition to the general CSU Theatre Program Learning Objectives, the Costume Design and Technology Concentration includes the following unique learning objectives:

  • Costume Design and Technology for Theatre, Film, and Industry: Students explore specific techniques used by costume, hair, and makeup designers and technicians to communicate their ideas through research, synthesis of skills (drawing, painting, mockups), and application of emerging technologies.
  • Design Artistry: Students develop an understanding of the Costume Designer as a collaborative artist, creative visionary, craftsperson, and working professional by practicing organizational, design, and craft skills to realize a show from concept to production.
  • They build a portfolio of creative design and/or technical work.

Portfolio Review:

  • Students must successfully undergo a portfolio review with CSU Theatre faculty to enter the B.A.
  • in Theatre, Costume Design and Technology Concentration.
  • The portfolio review also serves as a scholarship audition.
  • Students must undergo a portfolio review each spring to celebrate their work and receive guidance for future goals.
  • Program Total Credits: The program requires a minimum of 120 credits, with at least 42 credits being Upper-Division (300- to 400-level).
  • Course Schedule: The program provides a detailed course schedule for each semester, outlining critical and recommended courses.
