About Program
Program Overview
With a focus on hands-on experience through well-equipped laboratories, workshops, and industrial placements, graduates are well-prepared for careers in the maritime industry both shore-based and sea-going. The program is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and provides the educational base for graduates to gain Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, opening up a wide range of career opportunities in the field.
Program Outline
- To develop problem-solving and management skills essential for success in the field.
- To prepare students for careers in marine engineering, both shore-based and sea-going.
Program Description:
- The program emphasizes a professionally-accredited, design-led engineering curriculum, focusing on practical application.
- The program utilizes well-equipped laboratories and workshops with state-of-the-art software and technical support.
- Professional engineers contribute to the curriculum, and industrial visits provide insights into careers in professional engineering.
- Students have the option of completing an industrial placement.
- The foundation year allows progression to the BEng Marine and Mechanical Engineering program, which is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
- The program provides exemption from theoretical components of the Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW) professional qualifications, up to and including the level of Chief Engineer.
- Upon successful completion of the foundation year, students progress directly to the first year of the honors degree.
- The program is delivered at one of the UK's leading engineering schools, with supportive staff and excellent facilities, including:
- Engine test facilities
- Full marine engine room and bridge simulators
- Materials testing laboratories
- Digital design studios
- The program has strong links with national and international companies, such as Bibby Line, Rolls Royce, Shell, and Castrol, ensuring the curriculum meets employer needs.
- Students have the opportunity to undertake a year's paid placement in industry.
Course Schedule:
- The program is delivered over five years with a placement year or four years full-time.
- The program is divided into six levels (Level 3 - Foundation Year, Level 4 - Year 1, Level 5 - Year 2, Level 6 - Year 3, and optional Level 5 - Placement Year or Level 6 - MEng).
- Each level includes core and optional modules.
- Additional Foundation Physics: Provides basic knowledge of mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, fields, and electronics for students without A-level physics.
- Algorithms and Computing: Introduces technical computing and the application of computers in implementing simple algorithms.
- Introductory Foundation Physics: Provides basic knowledge of electricity mechanics, materials, and waves for students without A-level physics.
- Applied Mechanics 1: Introduces the essential principles of applied mechanics.
- Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics 1: Introduces the essential principles of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
- Materials: Introduces material science and engineering principles, focusing on material selection and manufacturing processes.
- Engineering Practice: Introduces a range of general engineering practices and standards.
- Materials and Processes: Provides a thorough understanding of structural engineering materials and their associated manufacturing processes.
- Applied Mechanics 2: Covers the principles of mechanics for rigid and deformable solid bodies.
- Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics 2: Provides insight into thermal plant cycles and the physical behavior of fluid flow and heat transfer.
- Marine Electrical Systems: Introduces marine instrumentation and stand-alone electrical power systems.
- Marine Design and Technology: Introduces marine engineering, naval architecture, and ship construction.
- Modelling and Simulation: Introduces methods for modelling and simulating engineering systems.
Optional Modules (Level 5):
- Sandwich Year - Mechanical and Marine Engineering: Provides students with a year of work experience at an approved partner, complementing their studies at LJMU.
- Study Year Abroad - Mechanical and Marine Engineering: Provides students with an additional year of study at an approved overseas partner.
Level 6 (Year 3):
- Engineering Project: Provides students with a supervised, student-led learning activity in a relevant area of engineering or technology.
- Industrial Management: Develops core management techniques for assessing the economic viability of products/projects and implementing delivery plans.
- Marine Design and Propulsion: Analyzes critical marine systems associated with ships, including safety aspects within the marine industry.
Optional Modules (Level 6):
- Computational Fluid Dynamics: Introduces Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and extends students' experience, knowledge, and skills using industry-standard software.
- Finite Element Analysis: Introduces Finite Element theory and uses relevant software for Finite Element studies.
- Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer: Further develops students' knowledge of fluid dynamics and heat transfer principles.
- Manufacturing Systems: Covers manufacturing systems, policy, logistical considerations, and process solutions.
- Dynamics and Control: Develops knowledge and experience of analytical and simulative methods for modelling and control design of open-loop and closed-loop engineering systems.
Assessment:
- Assessment methods vary depending on the modules chosen but typically include a combination of exams and coursework.
- Some modules may be assessed through a portfolio of work.
- A final year project allows students to work independently and contributes significantly to their final mark.
- Tutors provide prompt and constructive feedback through Canvas (LJMU's virtual learning environment), face-to-face, or written comments.
Teaching:
- The program utilizes an active blended learning approach, combining face-to-face and online learning.
- Teaching methods include lectures, small group tutorials, online activities, seminars, and practical sessions.
- Students have access to dedicated personal tutors for course-related discussions, personal development plans, and target setting.
- Placement tutors support students during industrial placements, liaising with potential employers and assisting with finding suitable positions.
- Academic staff members provide regular support to students during placements, visiting them in the workplace to monitor progress.
