Program Overview
The Craft Electrical Apprenticeship is a four-year program that combines on-the-job training and classroom education. Apprentices develop electrical science and installation techniques through work experience and educational phases, including university blocks. Upon completion, graduates are qualified electricians with career opportunities in electrical installation, maintenance, and more. This SOLAS-approved Level 6 apprenticeship requires minimum academic qualifications and may have additional employer requirements.

Degree Overview:
The Craft Electrical Apprenticeship is a four-year program that combines on-the-job training with off-the-job education. The program is delivered on both the Athlone and Moylish campuses.
Objectives:
The program aims to equip apprentices with the skills and knowledge necessary to become qualified electricians. Apprentices will learn about electrical science, installation techniques, panel wiring, motor control, alternative electrical energy sources, and more.
Outline:
The Craft Electrical Apprenticeship is structured into seven phases:
- Phase 1 – On the Job with Employer – 30-40 weeks: Induction Training, Introduction to Health & Safety, Introduction to Tools & Equipment, Introduction to Basic Skills.
- Phase 2 – Delivered in SOLAS Training Centre – 22 weeks: Electrical Science, Installation Techniques 1, Installation Techniques 2, Panel Wiring & Motor Control, Fundamentals of Alternative Electrical Energy Sources, Communications & Team Leadership.
- Phase 3 – On the Job with Employer – 30-40 weeks: Work Based Training & Assessments.
- Phase 4 – University Block – 11 weeks: Electricity 2, Power Distribution 1, Electronics 1, Alternative Electrical Energy Sources, Communications & Team Leadership.
- Phase 5 – On the Job with Employer – 30-40 weeks: Work Based Training & Assessments.
- Phase 6 – University Block – 11 weeks: Automation & Control, Intruder & Fire Alarm Systems, Electricity 3, Power Distribution 2, Electronics 2, Alternative Electrical Energy Sources, Communications & Team Leadership.
- Phase 7 – On the Job with Employer – 30-40 weeks: Work Based Training & Assessments.
Assessment:
The program includes a combination of on-the-job assessments and written exams.
Teaching:
The program is delivered through a combination of classroom instruction, practical workshops, and on-the-job training.
Careers:
Graduates of the Craft Electrical Apprenticeship program are qualified to work as electricians in a variety of settings, including:
- Electrical Installation – Domestic & Industrial
- Electrical Maintenance – Domestic & Industrial
- Electrical Commissioning- Domestic & Industrial
- Automation & Control Installation, Commissioning & Maintenance
Other:
- The program is delivered at Level 6.
- The program is a SOLAS-approved apprenticeship.
- To be eligible for the program, applicants must be at least 16 years of age and have a minimum of grade D in any five subjects in the Junior Certificate or equivalent.
- Employers may have additional requirements for applicants.
