Degree Overview:

This program combines Jungian Psychology with Art Therapy, offering a blend of experiential and theoretical learning. It aims to engage participants creatively with the psyche through art-making, journaling, and dream interpretation. The program explores Jung's model of the psyche, post-Jungian developments, and practical applications in everyday life.

  • Appreciate art therapy processes and methods through experiential and context-based learning.
  • Articulate creative, analytic, and critical insights into personal processes through written work (including personal images) and online contributions.
  • Demonstrate literacy in image interpretation and critically discuss creative expression and art-making as healing, as applied to key Jungian concepts.

Outline:


Semester 1:

  • Jung & Art Therapy: Introduces the integration of Jungian psychology and art therapy.
  • Model of the Psyche: Explores Jung's model of the psyche, including concepts like Persona, Shadow, Anima/Animus, and Self.
  • Art Therapy Experiential Day: Provides a hands-on experience with art therapy techniques.
  • Dream & Image Interpretation I & II: Covers the interpretation of dreams and images within the Jungian framework.

Semester 2:

  • Synchronicity: Examines the concept of synchronicity in Jungian psychology.
  • Alchemy and Individuation: Explores the alchemical process and its relevance to individuation.
  • Fairy Tale Interpretation I & II: Analyzes fairy tales as symbolic representations of psychological themes.
  • Art & Psyche Symposium: A forum for presentations and discussions related to art and the psyche.
  • Presentations/Seminar: Students present their work and engage in seminar discussions.

Assessment:

  • Coursework: Includes art-making, journaling, reading, writing, and presenting.
  • Assessment Criteria: Based on an essay, online contributions, and a presentation.

Teaching:

  • Delivery: The program is delivered over 12 days, typically spread across 6 Fridays and 6 Saturdays, on the Clare Street (Limerick) Campus.
  • Schedule: Classes run from 9:30 am to 5 pm, with instructor-led art therapy sessions and feedback sessions.

Other:

  • Time Commitment: Each 5 credits equates to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours, including in-class time and independent work.
  • Re-validation: The program is subject to re-validation.
  • Maximum Places: The program has a maximum of 19 places, offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Waiting List: A waiting list is established if applications exceed available places.
  • English Language Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English must meet specific English language proficiency requirements.
