Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Curso en Terapia Manual Pediátrica is a theoretical and practical training program designed for physiotherapists. It aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the pediatric patient, encompassing all factors that influence the child's health. The program emphasizes the importance of a bio-psychosocial approach to diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and respiratory problems in children. It offers specialized training and essential tools for managing children and their environments.

Outline:

The program is structured into seven modules, each focusing on a specific area of pediatric therapy:

Module 1 & 2: Current Theoretical and Practical Approach to the Pain Model in Pediatric Population

  • Pain as a concept: From neurophysiology to clinical practice.
  • Neurophysiological basis of pain and the developmental model of pain.
  • Alterations of the nervous system in pediatric pain.
  • Types and mechanisms of pain: Nociceptive, neuropathic, mixed, nociplastic.
  • Acute pain and types.
  • Chronic pain and types.
  • Differences between acute and chronic pain.
  • Fear-avoidance model within the bio-psychosocial approach to pediatric pain: relevant considerations and implications for clinical practice.
  • Clinical identification of pain mechanisms.
  • Theoretical model: relevant variables and clinical considerations.
  • Assessment, diagnosis, and screening.
  • Clinical tools and assessment systems.
  • Mediating factors: Bio-medical, psychological, social, genetic, and environmental.
  • Education in therapeutic neuroscience in childhood pain.

Module 3: Manual Therapy in Musculoskeletal Dysfunctions of the Craniocervicomandibular Region in Childhood

  • Morphology, biomechanics, and clinical neuroanatomy of the cervicocraniomandibular region.
  • Clinical reasoning.
  • Pathophysiology of the cervicocraniomandibular region: Congenital torticollis, plagiocephaly, cranial and vertebral scoliosis, obstetric brachial palsy, otalgia.
  • Exploration, diagnosis, and scientific evidence-based analysis of cervicocraniomandibular alterations in the pediatric population.
  • Orthopedic manual therapy for joint and muscle disorders.
  • Most common indications and surgical approaches in orthopedic and musculoskeletal pathologies.
  • New technologies for assessment and treatment in children.
  • Clinical case presentations.

Module 4: Manual Therapy in Musculoskeletal Dysfunctions of the Dorsal and Lumbar Region in Childhood

  • Musculoskeletal disorders of the dorsal and costal region.
  • Morphology, biomechanics, and clinical neuroanatomy of the dorsal and costal region.
  • Clinical reasoning.
