Degree Overview:
This program, "Language for Social Science and Arts: Arts and Humanities," is a 10-week full-time pre-sessional course designed to equip students with the academic English language skills necessary for pursuing a Masters degree in the arts and humanities. The program aims to help students:
- Improve their academic English language skills to the level required for Masters study.
- Adapt to life in the UK and at the University of Leeds.
- Become familiar with the University's facilities, including libraries, study spaces, and learning platforms.
- Settle into Leeds before their Masters program begins.
- Meet other students and build a community of peers. The program is taught by expert language teachers who introduce students to the language, texts, and practices they will encounter during their Masters degree.
Outline:
The curriculum is developed in collaboration with the academic faculty and is informed by research in English language teaching. The program is divided into two phases:
- First four weeks: Focus on improving academic English language ability for postgraduate study in the field of social science and arts.
- Final six weeks: Focus on the skills needed for the specific subject area of arts and humanities. Students will listen to introductory academic lectures exploring different themes over six weeks. They will work on understanding the content and language used, along with core texts, through language classes and seminars.
Assessment:
The program uses a range of assessment methods, which may include:
- Written assignments
- Speaking assignments
- Presentations
- Research projects
Teaching:
- Teaching methods: Classes, lectures, practical sessions, group seminars, and independent study.
- Faculty: Expert language teachers, lecturers, professors, industry professionals with years of experience, and trained postgraduate researchers.
- Unique approaches: The program incorporates research in language teaching to inform course content, ensuring high-quality teaching designed to help students succeed.
Other:
- Dedicated facilities: Students have access to the Language Zone, a study and resource center equipped with a computer cluster, books, magazines, audio and video resources. They can also participate in workshops, language groups, and language advice drop-ins.
- Accreditation: The course is accredited by BALEAP.
- Social activities: The Language Centre provides a weekly program of optional social activities, some of which are free and some with a cost (normally no more than £30).
- Accommodation: Accommodation is not included in the tuition fee.
- Learning materials: All learning materials are included in the tuition fee.
- University closure: Classes normally take place between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday, except when the University is closed.
