Program Overview
The BSc (Hons) Microbiology program provides a comprehensive exploration of microorganisms, including their biology, interactions, and applications. Students develop a strong foundation in life sciences and microbiology, gaining practical skills in laboratory techniques and data analysis. The program prepares graduates for diverse careers in academia, healthcare, industry, and beyond, where their scientific training is highly valued.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. The BSc (Hons) Microbiology degree focuses on the biology of micro-organisms that are unicellular, multicellular or acellular (without cells). This includes microbes like bacteria and fungi, and covers concepts like growth and regulation, and how microbes react with each other and their environments. The degree starts as a broad-based curriculum where you’ll study a wide range of life sciences topics at Levels 1 and 2. You’ll then focus more on key aspects of microbiology at Levels 3 and 4. Your first two years of study will explore core concepts like genetics, cell biology, biological organisation, molecular mechanisms and processes. You will develop your practical skills, including laboratory skills, data analysis, and experiment design.
Careers:
Our graduates find employment in a wide variety of positions in academic research (e.g. biomedical, genetic, agricultural or ecological research), in hospital labs, in environmental health, and in teaching. Industry employs microbiologists in the manufacture of numerous products, such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, cosmetics, food and drink, either because micro-organisms are used in the process or for reasons of microbiological safety and hygiene. In addition, many microbiology graduates find careers in management, regulatory affairs, publishing, patent documentation, and the media, where their scientific training is valued.
