Degree Overview:

This short course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of animation, both hand-drawn and digital. The course aims to develop students' skills in drawing, storytelling, design, and technical animation techniques. It covers a range of topics, including the twelve principles of animation, hand-drawn animation, tween animation, character design, and using industry-standard software like TV Paint and Adobe After Effects. The course is suitable for individuals with no prior experience in animation, as well as those looking to expand their existing skills.


Outline:

The course is structured into three stages:

  • Stage one: Creating character inspiration using AI image generation.
  • Using industry-standard software such as TV Paint and Adobe After Effects to create animation
  • Stage two: Learning the fundamentals using the twelve principles of animation.
  • Understanding the basics of hand-drawn animation and tween animation However, students will produce a series of short projects that demonstrate their new skills in animation and character design. Students receive 25 contact hours of quality tuition with an experienced tutor, Ben Arrowsuch. Ben is an Animator and Illustrator with extensive industry experience, having worked for clients such as the Animal Justice Project, Mozilla, King Gaming, and Candy Crush. The course emphasizes a collaborative learning environment, with a limited class size to ensure individual attention.

Careers:

The course is designed to prepare students for careers in the art and design industry, including animation and film, advertising and marketing, gaming, and multimedia companies. Upon successful completion, students receive a certificate of attendance, which can enhance their CV. The course also serves as a stepping stone to the 3D Animation and Character Creation course.

  • The course is offered on various dates throughout the year, including 12 August 2024, 7 October 2024, and 20 January 2025.
  • The course fee is £495 (2023/24) or £595 (2024/25).
  • Students are required to bring a notepad and pen, sketchbook and colored pencils, and a memory stick to save their work.
  • Students have access to the university's library and IT equipment and software during the course.
  • The course is open to individuals over the age of 18.
  • Students can book their place via the NTU online store.
  • The course is part of the Design and Digital Arts program.
