Degree Overview:
Students majoring in Women and Gender Studies may enrol in WGS courses and courses focusing on women, gender, and sexuality in any other department. The choice of electives is flexible, and your advisor will assist you in devising a program appropriate to your own needs and interests. With the consent of your academic adviser, you may also use courses with a focus on women taken at other colleges and universities as part of the Women and Gender Studies major.

San Francisco State University has offered classes relating to women's studies since 1971. In 1976 the Department of Women and Gender Studies was founded, becoming one of the first such departments in the United States. We encourage intellectual collaborations within the department, as well as across the profession, and also support applications for internal and external funding to support research productivity.
