Program Overview

This MPhil in Materials and Fluid Flow Modelling program offers specialized doctoral research focusing on liquid crystals, polymers, and other materials, utilizing advanced techniques and a vibrant research community. Through independent research supervised by experts, and with access to world-leading facilities, graduates pursue careers in industries ranging from software development to risk management.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

This MPhil program focuses on doctoral research in the field of materials and fluid flow modelling. It offers the opportunity to delve into a specific area within this diverse subject, encompassing topics like liquid crystals, polymers, and thermodynamics. The program emphasizes advanced techniques, cutting-edge technology, and expert tutelage, allowing students to contribute to the acclaimed work of MERI researchers. Students will join a vibrant research community, including 100 PhD students, and their work will contribute to MERI publications, many of which are considered 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent'.

Teaching:

The program is research-oriented, with most work conducted independently. Students receive support and expertise from a supervisory team, including a Director of Studies and a second supervisor specializing in the chosen subject area. Indicative topic areas include liquid crystals, self-assembled structures, and foods. Students can utilize various simulation methods, such as molecular dynamics or Monte Carlo, for their research. Learning takes place through:

  • Independent research
  • Laboratory training
  • Research training, including mandatory ethics and integrity sessions
  • Teacher training
  • Participation in the MERI Research Colloquium, involving poster and oral presentations

Careers:

This program prepares students for careers in:

  • Software development and management
  • IT systems
  • Banking
  • Risk management
  • Financial data provision
  • Previous graduates have secured positions at institutions like:
  • Harvard University
  • The University of Cambridge
  • The University of Nottingham
  • Max Plank Inst Mainz
  • Max Plank Inst Gottingen
  • Aix-Marseille University
  • The University of Pittsburgh

Other:

  • The program is offered full-time and takes 2 years to complete.
  • Students study at City Campus, which is located in the heart of Sheffield, within minutes of the train and bus stations.
  • The program provides access to high-performance computing hardware, a Beowulf Cluster with several hundred cores, a high-speed backplane, and experimental facilities within MERI's extensive portfolio of materials preparation and characterization equipment.
  • The University has invested over £100m in new facilities, including 24-hour libraries and study spaces designed by students.
