Program Overview

The MPhil program in Plasma Surface Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University provides a comprehensive and research-focused curriculum in advanced surface engineering technologies. Students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge facilities and contribute to the university's acclaimed research work in this field. The program prepares graduates for careers in research, coating technology development, and other specialized roles in surface engineering.

Program Outline

It emphasizes hands-on experience with advanced surface analyses, ultimately preparing graduates to become employable specialist engineers. Students will contribute to the research work of MERI, which is widely acclaimed for its publications, many of which are considered "world leading" or "internationally excellent."

Teaching:

The program is research-focused, with most of the work carried out independently. Students benefit from the support and expertise of a supervisory team, including a Director of Studies and a second supervisor specializing in the student's chosen subject area. The program emphasizes independent research, mentoring, laboratory training, research training (including mandatory ethics and integrity sessions), teacher training, and close tutelage in academic writing.

Careers:

This program prepares students for careers in research, coating technology development engineering, sales, management of coating centers, and surface engineering. Previous graduates have secured positions at institutions like the University of Sheffield, the University of Manchester, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, DIAMOND Source Centre, Advanced Forming Research Centre, University of Strathclyde, Richter Precision, and Trumpf Huetting Elektronik.

Other:

The program is offered full-time and takes two years to complete. Students have access to a range of facilities, including an industrial-size HAUZER 1000-4, K.J. Lesker UHV, Von Ardenne Anlagen Technik Cluster coating deposition systems, energy-resolved mass spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, plasma probe analysers, and a full range of analytical equipment for characterizing the mechanical, tribological, high temperature, corrosion, and corrosion-erosion properties of thin films. The program also benefits from the microelectronic materials and sensors group at the Thin Films Research Centre (TFRC), which operates a range of electrochemical and chemical deposition systems, as well as specialized coating characterization analytical equipment.
