Degree Overview:

Develop the core knowledge and competencies you’ll need to work in the environment sector. Critically assess the theoretical basis for modern environmental policies and practice worldwide. Design your own course within the wildlife & landscape management or international resource management routes. Learn from staff with extensive research and professional experience. You’ll study a course accredited by the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). We’ll introduce you to environmental experts and you’ll have the chance to work on live projects for real clients.


Assessment:

You’ll be assessed on the application of skills and knowledge – evidenced through your coursework. You’ll also engage in formative exercises, group discussions and critical analyses of current environmental issues and case studies.


Teaching:

All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive. We provide a supportive, inclusive and challenging learning experience – helping you develop as a self-directed learner with a long-lasting passion for environmental management. Our applied focus on professional skills and competencies encourages you to develop a personal career development plan – supported by our specialist Employability Advisers. Many of our graduates go on to work in the consultancy sector – which spans both ecology and resource management. Other employment opportunities include government agencies (Defra, Environment Agency) companies such as McCain Foods, Amey PLC, United Utilities and Geosphere Environmental Ltd advising on the development and implementation of an environmental management system in almost any business major third-sector conservation organisations, such as the RSPB and Wildlife Trusts National Park Authorities and Local Government


Other:

You’ll complete a major independent research project, which you’ll design on a subject of your choice under the expert supervision of an academic. Projects are often aligned with current research activities undertaken by our staff – in collaboration with a wide range of partners, including local government, the Environment Agency, industry and conservation organisations. You may also be able to work in a small group to complete a live consultancy project for one of our partner organisations – who act as a real-life client for your work. In these locations you’ll see examples of the principles and practice techniques covered on the course. Recent visits have included habitat management in the Peak District and lowland peat bogs, ecological survey in local farmland, sustainable housing design, and innovative waste management practices in Sheffield. Where possible these visits involve the external professionals responsible for the site or the process in question. By working with them you can explore the different roles within the environmental sector. On this course you have access to sites in the Sheffield area and Peak District, allowing you to explore environmental management issues well-equipped labs for environmental science, hydrology and materials testing a wide range of specialist field equipment, which is available to use in your major research project
