Program Overview
This 1.75-year full-time program prepares graduates with non-Education degrees to become secondary school teachers in their chosen teaching areas (Science, Humanities, Health, or VET). Through SimLabTM technology, Adjunct mentorship, and Professional Experience, students gain practical skills in effective teaching, diversity inclusion, and adolescent development. Upon graduation, individuals are qualified to teach in secondary schools and pursue careers in related fields like Scitech or museums.

Degree Overview:
This course is a 1.75 year full-time initial teaching qualification for graduates who hold a Bachelor’s degree in a non-Education field relevant to teaching. It will equip students with the specialist knowledge, skills and capabilities to teach students from Years 7-12 in a teaching area they are passionate about. Students will choose a major teaching area (Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS), Health and Physical Education) and a minor teaching area (Science, HaSS, Vocational Education and Training (VET), Health and Physical Education). The program will cover topics such as:
- Strategies for effective learning and teaching in secondary schools
- Planning and assessing teaching and learning opportunities
- Exploring how diversity can be accommodated in the classroom
- Understanding adolescent health and development

Teaching:
- SimLabTM technology: Students will practice dealing with challenging behaviour and conflict resolution through the use of SimLabTM technology, a virtual classroom that uses actors and avatars.
- Adjuncts: Students will gain experience from Adjuncts (current teachers) who will share resources, strategies and knowledge.
- Class schedule: Except for four curriculum units, classes are held on a Thursday to assist in managing family and work commitments.
Careers:
- Secondary schools: Graduates will be qualified to teach in secondary schools.
- Other careers with an education focus: Graduates may also pursue careers in areas such as Scitech, museums and zoos.
Other:
- International student availability: International students must commence in Semester 1 and cannot apply for Semester 2.
- Professional recognition: Graduates will be able to seek registration from the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA) and from other accrediting bodies across Australia.
- Placement requirements: Prior to placement in any school for Professional Experience, it is mandatory that pre-service teachers complete or obtain several forms and clearances.
- LANTITE: Prior to graduation, it is mandatory that students satisfactorily complete ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) testing of literacy and numeracy (LANTITE).
- Overseas Professional Experience: A maximum of 25% of total Professional Experience days in the course may be taken overseas.
- Part-time study: Part-time study is available for Year One of the course only. Students must be available to study full-time in Year Two.
