Program Overview
The Diploma in Genealogy is a two-year program combining practical and theoretical study in genealogy research skills, portfolio building, and heritage and tourism employment. Through a blend of lectures, workshops, and project work, this NFQ Level 7 program prepares students for careers in family history, historical record-keeping, and more. Students who complete Year 1 may opt to exit with a Certificate in Genealogy, ensuring flexibility and a tailored learning experience.

Degree Overview:
The Diploma in Genealogy is a part-time program designed to equip learners with practical skills and transferable skills aimed at genealogy, heritage, and tourism employment. It combines practical skills with portfolio-based assessments. The program offers modules in genealogy, fieldwork, collection care, and portfolio building. It provides participants with the opportunity to engage in an interdisciplinary study of the past while developing genealogical research skills. The Diploma in Genealogy (NFQ, Level 7) is a two-year program. Participants complete five modules per academic year, totaling 60 credits. The course is taught through a series of lectures and workshops.

Assessment:
Assessment is by various forms of continuous assessment.
Teaching:
The course is taught by Dr David J Butler, an historical geographer, and a team of visiting lecturers and tutors who teach in their areas of expertise. The course is delivered through a series of lectures and workshops.

Other:
- Voluntary placements exist for practice-based work within Genealogy research centers.
- Candidates who successfully complete First Year may opt not to proceed to Second Year and may exit the program with a Certificate in Genealogy.
- Diploma programs are offered subject to a minimum number of eligible applicants registering for the program. Following completion of year 1 of this program, should a sufficient number of eligible students not wish to progress from year 1 to year 2 of this program as to make the year 2 viable, students will graduate with a certificate at that point. Program viability is determined by reference to fee income and applicable costs in running the program.
€1500 per academic year. All ACE students are eligible to apply for loan membership of the Lough Credit Union. Students who join the Lough Credit Union loan scheme will be issued a membership number which must be inputted when registering online for this course. The purpose of this partnership is to provide finance for students, so that all may be in a position to take this course via a weekly payments system.
