Program Overview


The Redesigning the Post-Industrial City (RePIC) MSc is a two-year program designed to develop urban thinkers and equip them with skills to revitalize post-industrial cities. The program emphasizes transformative teaching, research, and learning, focusing on sustainability, diversity, and urban development. Students can choose from various tracks and engage in CityLab projects, gaining intercultural and multilingual experience while collaborating with city stakeholders to address urban challenges.

Degree Overview:

The Redesigning the Post-Industrial City (RePIC) MSc is a two-year, English-taught Master's program jointly designed and delivered by the UNIC alliance. The program aims to build a vibrant knowledge and innovation community committed to rethinking more sustainable urban futures. RePIC fosters transformative modes of teaching, research, and learning, responding to the specific challenges and characteristics of post-industrial cities and their increasingly super-diverse populations.


Objectives:

  • Develop a new network of urban thinkers with the capacity to contribute to future-oriented, avant-garde thinking on the revitalisation of the post-industrial city.
  • Equip students with design thinking skills and teach them how to communicate and effectively visualize the challenges and solutions that beset society today.
  • Engage students with real urban challenges in participatory approaches, network with city leaders across Europe, and engage in in-depth learning of a myriad of issues such as urban development, local governance, diversity and inclusion, and beyond.
  • Provide students with intercultural and multilingual skills and experience European exchange.

Outline:

The program is divided into four semesters, with several mobility options offered within each semester.


Semester 1 (30 credits):

  • AT6017 RePIC CityLab & Design Research Studio: Urban Analysis, Digital Design Strategies & Design Visualisations (10 credits, UCC, prior to semester start at RUB): This module introduces students to the RePIC CityLab and Design Research Studio, focusing on urban analysis, digital design strategies, and design visualizations.
  • The Post-Industrial City: Society, Space & Environment (10 credits, RUB): This module explores the social, spatial, and environmental aspects of post-industrial cities.
  • RePIC Urban Sustainability Transformations Seminar Series (5 credits, RUB): This seminar series delves into urban sustainability transformations.
  • Research Methods & Academic Writing: Ethics, Modalities & Co-Design Techniques (asynchronous online classroom/forum) (5 credits): This module covers research methods, academic writing, ethics, modalities, and co-design techniques.

Semester 2 (30 credits):

  • AT6019 Research Design Studio: Salvaging & Transformations of the Post-Industrial City (15 credits, UCC): This module focuses on research design and the salvaging and transformation of post-industrial cities.
  • AT6020 Research Methods II: Digital Storytelling & Immersive Fictions (5 credits, UCC): This module explores digital storytelling and immersive fictions as research methods.
  • GG6018 Conceptualising Society, Space, & the City (10 credits, UCC): This module examines the conceptualization of society, space, and the city.

Semester 3 (30 credits):

  • AT6021 CityLab & Field Salon (10 credits, UCC): This module combines CityLab activities with field salon experiences.
  • AT6022 Structured Learning & Engaged Research Placement (15 credits, UCC): This module offers structured learning opportunities and engaged research placements.
  • Research Methods III (5 credits, RUB): This module delves deeper into research methods.

Semester 4 (30 credits):

  • AT6023 RePIC Dissertation (30 credits, UCC): This module focuses on the final dissertation project, which can be a traditional dissertation, a research manuscript aiming for publication, or a practical project accompanied by documentation.

  • CityLabs facilitate the collaboration of students, researchers, city stakeholders, organizations, and citizens to identify local societal challenges, co-create solutions, and implement those solutions locally to drive societal change in post-industrial cities.

Assessment:

The program utilizes a variety of assessment methods, including:

  • Coursework: Assignments, presentations, and participation in seminars and workshops.
  • CityLab Projects: Collaborative projects with city stakeholders and community groups.
  • Dissertation: A final research project, which can be a traditional dissertation, a research manuscript aiming for publication, or a practical project accompanied by documentation.
