The MD/MSBME Track at UCF is a 5-year program combining the MD and MSBME degrees for medical students. Degree Overview:

The Biomedical Engineering MS program offers an MD/MSBME Track that enables qualified students to earn both the MD and the MSBME degrees. This combined program is designed for medical students and runs as a 5-year program. Students will gain knowledge and skills in areas such as bioinstrumentation, biomechanics, biofluids, and medical device design.


Program Description:

  • Duration: 5 years
  • Structure: The program combines the MD curriculum with the MSBME curriculum.
  • Admission: Students must apply and be accepted into both the medical school and the Biomedical Engineering MS program.
  • Credit Hours: A minimum of 30 credit hours beyond the Bachelor's Degree are required for the MSBME.
  • Transfer Credit: Students receive 9 credit hours of transfer credit from their MD program towards the MSBME degree.
  • Coursework: The program includes biomedical engineering core courses, concentration courses in Biofluids or Biomechanics, and a thesis.
  • Thesis: Students must complete a master's thesis and defend it.

  • Independent Learning: The Independent Learning Requirement is met by successful completion of a master's thesis.
  • Program of Study: Students must identify an adviser and file an official program of study prior to completing 9 credit hours of study.
  • Substitutions: Substitutions to the program of study must be approved by the student's faculty adviser and department.
  • Financial Assistance: Graduate students may receive financial assistance through fellowships, assistantships, tuition support, or loans.
  • Fellowships: Fellowships are awarded based on academic merit to highly qualified students.
  • Course Level: All students must take at least 15 credit hours at the 6000 level.
  • Coursework Requirements: At least 24 credit hours of the program of study must be coursework, exclusive of research and thesis hours.
  • MAE Department: Students should consult with the MAE Graduate Program Director for assistance in filling out their program of study.
