Program Overview

The Certificate in Foundations of Science and Diploma in General Science programs provide students with a solid foundation in scientific concepts and methods. The certificate program introduces students to scientific thought and provides a pathway to further study in science. The diploma program allows students to specialize in a specific scientific field while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Both programs offer hands-on learning experiences and access to research opportunities through the Faculty of Science.

Program Outline

Degree Overview:

  • Certificate in Foundations of Science:
  • Overview:
  • This is a one-year program at the introductory level that introduces students to the foundations of scientific thought. It is a laddering credential, meaning courses can be used towards the Diploma in General Science or any Bachelor of Science program offered by the Faculty of Science. It is also a good option for students with educational and career goals that don't require a Bachelor of Science degree or Science diploma.
  • Objectives: The program aims to introduce students to the foundations of scientific thought, develop empirical and critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and provide exposure to various scientific subjects.
  • Diploma in General Science:
  • Overview:
  • This is a two-year program that introduces students to the methods and values of scientific inquiry. It encourages students to identify a field of study that interests them and develop a deeper understanding of that field. Students must choose a concentration in one of the following subjects: Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics, Statistics, or Physics. It is also a laddering credential, meaning courses can be used towards any Bachelor of Science program offered by the Faculty of Science.
  • Objectives: The program aims to introduce students to the methods and values of scientific inquiry, encourage students to identify a field of study that interests them, and develop a deeper understanding of that field.

Teaching:

  • Faculty: The Faculty of Science at the University of Regina is a community of students and scholars committed to impactful scientific discovery and transformative science education.
  • Many faculty members are active scholars whose research occupies a significant portion of their academic work. By engaging in research, they remain at the forefront of knowledge, passing that knowledge on to their students.

Other:

  • Science: Science is an organized system of knowledge about the physical world, based on observation, measurement, and experiment.
  • Western Science is based on the scientific method, which is a specific way in which our understanding of the world is formed.
  • Benefits of Studying Science at the University of Regina:
  • Taking a shorter program where you gain a broad background in science helps you discover which subjects interest you the most.
  • You'll get hands-on learning with labs in biology, chemistry, and physics.
  • The courses you take to complete the certificate or diploma can then be used towards the requirements of a Bachelor of Science degree.
  • You will take courses in biology, chemistry, geology, physics, math, and more.
  • Many faculty members are active scholars whose research occupies a significant portion of their academic work.
  • By engaging in research, they remain at the forefront of knowledge, passing that knowledge on to their students.
  • Student Organizations:
  • Students enrolled in these programs are Faculty of Science students and have access to all of the University clubs, events, and services, including the University of Regina Students’ Union.
  • Students will belong to the Science Students’ Society.
  • General Science diploma students can also participate in the student clubs associated with their concentration.
