Program Overview
This program, offered by Nottingham Trent University, introduces the fundamentals of 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining. Through hands-on demonstrations and practical knowledge, participants learn about the capabilities, limitations, and cost implications of these prototyping technologies. The course is designed to help individuals understand when to purchase equipment or utilize online services and emphasizes the role of physical prototypes in product development and innovation.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
This course is designed for those interested in learning about 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining for prototyping. It aims to help participants understand the different technologies, their benefits and limitations, and whether they need to purchase a machine or use an online bureau service. The course emphasizes the importance of physical prototypes in product development and innovation.
Outline:
The course covers the following topics:
- Creating a 3D CAD model: Participants will learn how to create a simple 3D CAD model.
- Laser cutting: Participants will learn how to convert a 3D CAD model into a laser-cut part and create a first prototype. They will also explore the benefits and limitations of simple laser-cut parts.
- CNC machining: Participants will see a demonstration of a part being CNC machined and learn about the benefits and limitations of this process.
- 3D printing technologies: Participants will handle samples from different 3D printing technologies, learn about the costs associated, and where to obtain 3D printed parts.
Teaching:
The course is taught in-person at NTU's City Campus. The course duration is one day, from 10am to 4pm. The course is led by James Meadwell, Senior Research Fellow in Design at Nottingham Trent University.
Other:
The course is delivered through the Enterprising Ashfield project, funded by the Government's Towns Fund. It is offered free of charge to eligible participants who live or work in Kirkby-in-Ashfield or Sutton-in-Ashfield.
