Program Overview
The program emphasizes independent learning, problem-solving, and industry-focused skills, preparing graduates for careers in various engineering sectors. Students can participate in a one-year paid work experience option and have access to research-informed teaching, language learning opportunities, and entrepreneurial support through NTU Enterprise.
Program Outline
The program emphasizes independent learning, problem-solving, and self-organization. It combines computer science, electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, and management to equip students with imaginative and innovative design solutions, enterprise, leadership, and interpersonal skills. A one-year paid work experience option is available.
Outline:
The program consists of six core modules and a substantial Individual or Research Project.
Modules:
- Research Methods (20 cp): This module focuses on literature searching and critical reviewing strategies, ethical considerations, research design, sampling, and quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques using applicable software tools.
- Individual Industrial or Research Project (60 cp): This "capstone" project allows students to combine their acquired knowledge, understanding, and skills. They will investigate an engineering problem, implement solutions, critically evaluate and reflect on their work, and develop their communication, self-organization, and management abilities. The CPD component of this module will inform their learning journey throughout their MSc and after.
- Cellular Networks and Internet of Things (20 cp): This module explores the technologies, protocols, and applications of cellular networks and their integration with the Internet of Things (IoT). Students will gain knowledge and skills to design, deploy, and manage cellular-based IoT systems.
- Advanced Digital Signal Processing (20 cp): This module emphasizes the theoretical foundations, practical implementations, and real-world applications of digital signal processing (DSP). Students will cover spectral analysis, statistical signal processing, and adaptive filters.
- Embedded Systems and Sensors (20 cp): This module develops the skills and knowledge to create efficient and reliable embedded systems and interface them with sensors. Students will learn how to apply them to various domains, including IoT, robotics, automation, and smart systems.
- Group Design Project (20 cp): This module focuses on the technical aspects of developing a cross-disciplinary group design project. The set projects will be taken from areas of advancing technology.
Structure:
The postgraduate academic year is divided into three terms:
- Term One (10 weeks): Students study 40 credits.
- Term Two (20 weeks): Students study 80 credits.
- Term Three (15 weeks): Students study 60 credits for the MSc. The first two terms are dedicated to taught modules, and the last term is dedicated to an individual major project.
Assessment:
Assessment methods include:
- Exams (28%): Including practical assessments.
- Methods: Lectures, seminars, workshops (20%), and independent study (80%).
- Research Informed Teaching: The subjects are informed by NTU's research, ensuring cutting-edge knowledge. NTU's Engineering submission in the last Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021) was assessed to be 98% world-leading or internationally excellent.
Careers:
- Potential Career Paths: Graduates are well-prepared for a range of careers in the industrial or engineering sectors.
- Employability: The industry-focused nature of the course ensures graduates stand out in job applications. NTU graduates are widely respected by employers, and Engineering students are perceived as having a competitive edge due to the hands-on approach of the teaching.
- Placement Opportunities: NTU offers work experience opportunities, and the School of Science and Technology helps students find placements and strengthen their CVs and interview techniques. A one-year work placement is available after the first three terms.
- Recent Graduate Employers: Renishaw, Project Solar UK, Hull City Council, NHS, Siemens, Apiject, Active Plan Consulting, Suman Chemical Industries, Techplus Solutions.
- Recent Graduate Roles: Software Engineer, Cloud Operations Officer, Business Analyst.
Other:
- Language Learning: Students have the opportunity to learn a new language through the University Language Programme (ULP).
- NTU Enterprise: Students can turn their ideas into a viable business with help from NTU Enterprise, a support center for entrepreneurship.
