MSc Facilities Management - Edinburgh Napier University
Degree Overview:
This MSc program in Facilities Management is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate professionally within the industry. It addresses the growing global demand for qualified Facilities Management practitioners, particularly in light of a skills shortage. The program is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), providing a pathway towards chartered status.
Objectives:
- To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and methods of successful facilities management, encompassing technological processes and commercial considerations.
- To equip students with the skills and knowledge to manage a wide range of FM services, including technology, maintenance, engineering, property asset management, project and change management, space management, corporate social responsibility, risk and compliance, and more.
Outline:
The program is delivered entirely through distance learning, with no attendance requirement other than for exams. Students start the course in September and the MSc will take around two years to complete.
Modules:
- Building Economics (BSV11111): Covers macroeconomic overview of the national economy, appraisal and analysis of the property and construction industries, economic models of urban location and growth, urban land economics, building value, and developer's budgets.
- Dissertation (BSV11120): Focuses on research methodology, developing a proposal, designing a research strategy, literature reviews, data gathering, analysis, presentation, writing up, and presentation.
- Facilities Management 1 (BSV11112): Introduces facilities management, including space management, quality management, GIS, support services, and strategies for improving implementation.
- Facilities Management 2 (BSV11113): Covers strategic aspects of facilities management, risk management, adding value through FM, customer service, environmental management, corporate social responsibility, project management, and application of ICT to FM.
- Health and Safety (BSV11142): Explores health and safety law, its history, and development in the UK, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, risk assessment, principles of prevention, health and safety arrangements, and specific health and safety issues.
- Law and Administration: Property and Construction (BSV11106): Covers legal concepts, jurisdiction, contract law, negligence, property law, leases, health and safety law in construction, dispute resolution, forms of contract, and procurement strategy.
- Property Asset Management (BSV11109): Focuses on the role of the property asset manager, models of property asset management, registration, valuation, performance measurement, information technology for PAM, property asset management in corporate and public sectors, and corporate social responsibility.
Assessment:
Assessment is conducted through a mix of written examinations and coursework assignments. Coursework is submitted online, and campus attendance is only required for written exams. Exams can also be taken at approved examination centers outside the UK.
Teaching:
Students learn through a combination of self-directed independent online learning materials, online discussion topics, and independent study.
