MSc Diagnostic Radiography (Pre-registration)
Program Overview
This two-year master's program in Diagnostic Radiography provides students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to produce high-quality images for diagnosing and monitoring health conditions. Through lectures, simulations, and practice placements, students develop proficiency in X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, and mammography. Upon graduation, students are eligible to register as Diagnostic Radiographers with the HCPC, qualifying them to work in the UK NHS or private practice.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
This accelerated two-year, full-time master’s degree program is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience to provide safe, high-quality care to patients requiring imaging.
- To develop students' clinical skills in a variety of imaging modalities, including X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, and mammography.
- To equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively as a diagnostic radiographer in a variety of healthcare settings.
- To foster students' professional development and prepare them for a successful career in diagnostic radiography.
Outline:
The program is structured around a combination of lectures, small group tutorials and workshops, directed and independent learning, simulation sessions in the contemporary imaging suite on campus, and practice placement.
Course Schedule:
- Year 1:
- Introduction to Diagnostic Imaging
- Applications of Diagnostic Imaging
- Integrated Care and Multidisciplinary Working
- Practice Placement 1 (Pass/Refer)
- Year 2:
- The Contemporary Practitioner
- Research Project
- Advancing Radiography Practice Students will also learn about working in the NHS, complete mandatory training and e-learning for health training, and cover essential introductory physics including the IR(ME)R (2017) regulations. Anatomy, physiology, pathology, and imaging of the remaining body systems are also covered.
- Integrated Care and Multidisciplinary Working: This module covers trauma imaging, imaging in the operating theatre, mobile imaging, service user needs, and working in a multidisciplinary team.
- The Contemporary Practitioner: This module explores a range of professional issues and the wider implications of current government initiatives and policies. It critically reflects on the NHS constitution, principles, and values. Aspects and experience of role transition are also discussed, underpinned by recent research and input from alumni. Students are introduced to the principles of leadership, teaching and learning, and supporting and developing others. The roles of supervision and mentoring learners in the practice environment are also scrutinized, alongside the evolving roles of the diagnostic radiographer.
- Research Project: This module starts with a recap on research methods alongside a formative research proposal. The project takes the form of a service evaluation or audit, which will be practice-led.
- Advancing Radiography Practice: This module includes current issues – enhanced, advanced, and consultant practice. Initial radiographer commenting and reporting is also a part of this module.
Assessment:
Students are assessed in both academic and practice placement settings. Assessment methods include:
- Examinations
- Viva voces
- Case studies
- Presentations
- Posters
- Seminars
- Practice Assessment Documents (PAD)
Teaching:
- Teaching Methods: The program utilizes a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, small group tutorials and workshops, directed and independent learning, simulation sessions, and practice placement.
- Faculty: The program is taught by a team of experienced HCPC-registered diagnostic radiographers who are passionate about providing students with a high-quality education.
- Unique Approaches: The program emphasizes practical learning through simulation sessions and practice placement. Students are also encouraged to develop their problem-solving skills through small group learning and image critique sessions.
Careers:
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to register with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) to work as a Diagnostic Radiographer in the UK within the NHS or private practice.
- NHS Values: The program embeds the NHS Values into everything it does. These values underpin the expectations of staff and students and are assessed at interview.
- Facilities and Resources: The University provides students with access to a range of facilities and resources to support their learning, including a contemporary imaging suite, anatomical models, anthropomorphic phantoms, computer labs, and Brightspace (the Online Learning Environment).
