English Law and French Law LLB

Program Overview

This four-year LLB program combines studies in English and French law, providing a foundation for a legal career in both the UK and France. Students spend the first three years at the University of Exeter and their final year at the University of Rennes I, developing legal knowledge and skills through interactive seminars, workshops, and guided study, with assessment through assignments, exams, and oral presentations. The program includes French law modules taught in French by qualified French lawyers, and offers extracurricular opportunities such as the Legal Assistance Programme and mooting.

• Students study French law as a foundation course during their three years in Exeter, taught and assessed in French.
• Modules in French law are taught by highly qualified French lawyers in the relevant language.
• Accreditation: The LLB program provides an excellent start to a legal career, equipping students with the knowledge and skills required for the academic stage of qualification as a barrister.
• Course Schedule:
• Year 1:
120 credits of compulsory modules, including:
• The Law of Contract (30 credits)
• French Constitutional Law (30 credits)
• Constitutional and Administrative Law (30 credits)
• Legal Foundations (30 credits)
• Year 2:
105 credits of compulsory modules and 15 credits of optional modules, including:
• The Law of Torts (30 credits)
• Land Law (30 credits)
• French Administrative Law (30 credits)
• European Union Law (15 credits)
• Optional modules: Students select one 15-credit module from the list of optional modules offered in the Law School at Level 5.
• Year 3: 90 credits of compulsory modules and 30 credits of optional modules, including:
• Criminal Law (30 credits)
• Trusts (30 credits)
• French Law of Contract (30 credits)
• Optional modules: Students select 30 credits of optional modules at Level 6 and/or Level 5, with a maximum of 30 credits at Level 5.
They must take a minimum of 90 credits at Level 6. Students can choose up to 30 credits of modules outside the Law School, subject to availability and approval.
• Final Year: 120 credits of compulsory modules, spent at the Law Faculty of the University of Rennes 1, following one of the Master 1 (Maîtrise en Droit) (Master 1) programs.
Students are registered at the University of Exeter on the compulsory module, LAW4000 Year Abroad: Maitrise.

• Mooting: Exeter has an international reputation for mooting, providing students with the opportunity to practice advocacy skills in a simulated court environment.
• Student Negotiation Society: Sends teams to the National Negotiation Competition.
• Proficiency in a Second Subject: Students can complete 60 credits of modules in a subject outside of their course, such as a foreign language, data science, entrepreneurship, innovation, law, leadership, or social data science, which may be added to their degree title upon graduation.
