Program Overview


The MSc Medical Imaging with Management program is designed for healthcare professionals who wish to advance their careers in radiology. This inter-disciplinary MSc Medical Imaging with Management course is designed for scientists, radiographers, medical physicists, engineers, and medical students who wish to progress their careers in radiology. The program aims to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge for advanced medical imaging practice, research, and leadership roles.


Objectives:

  • Develop the skillset needed for a career in advanced medical imaging practice, research, and leadership.
  • Achieve a systematic understanding of cross-sectional imaging.
  • Gain essential leadership and people management skills for a career in this specialized field.
  • Provide an education and research resource for students using MRI and ultrasound scanners and other imaging modalities from local healthcare partners.

Core Units:

  • Cross-sectional Imaging 1 (MRI): This unit covers the physical principles, specific imaging techniques, basic imaging anatomy, and recognition of common clinical abnormalities when using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques.
  • It also explores clinical, research, and technological advancements in MRI practice.
  • Cross-sectional Imaging 2 (CT): This unit focuses on the physical principles, specific imaging techniques, basic imaging anatomy, and recognition of common clinical abnormalities when using computed tomography (CT) techniques.
  • It also explores clinical, research, and technological advancements in CT practice.
  • Research Methods for Health & Social Care: This unit aims to enable students to critically appraise various research methods in addressing health and social care questions.
  • Students will become familiar with common methodological approaches to research and gain an understanding of the principles that underpin data analysis and interpretation.
  • Managing People: This unit develops knowledge, skills, and understanding of the theories and practices of organizational behavior, particularly in people management, and how this contributes to positive organizational outcomes.
  • Leadership Essentials: This unit provides a critical understanding of leadership theory and its application in various organizational settings.
  • Students will develop self-awareness, teamwork skills, and a theoretical understanding of emotional intelligence, resilience, and well-being.
  • Dissertation: The dissertation project is a student-managed piece of work undertaken with guidance from academic supervisors.
  • It also explores health data generation, compilation, analysis, synthesis, communication, and analytics.
  • Systematic Reviewing to Inform Practice: This unit helps students develop skills in searching for relevant research publications, extracting and synthesizing data, interpreting findings, and reporting them systematically.
  • Cross-Sectional Imaging III (Medical Ultrasound): This unit provides the fundamentals of physical principles, imaging techniques, basic imaging anatomy, common clinical abnormalities, and governance principles of medical ultrasound.

  • Students are taught by a range of staff with relevant expertise and knowledge appropriate to the content of the unit.
  • This includes senior academic staff, qualified professional practitioners, demonstrators, technicians, and research students.
  • Many staff are actively engaged in research and/or professional practice, which is integrated into the teaching of this course.

Careers:

Upon completion of this course, graduates will possess the advanced scientific and leadership knowledge and the necessary skillset mix and competencies required to:

  • Improve their current radiographic practice.
  • Take on leadership/managerial roles within radiology departments.
  • Progress into careers in industry as an application/education/sales specialist manager for imaging device manufacturing companies like Siemens, General Electric Co, Philips, Agfa, Toshiba, Hitachi, etc.

  • The Department of Medical Science & Public Health provides a focus for work and research into medical imaging with our Institute of Medical Imaging and Visualisation (IMIV).
  • The course incorporates expertise in organizational business management from BU’s Business School.
  • The course is also available to be taken as PgCert or PgDip.
