Program Outline


Objectives:

  • Develop key intellectual and practical skills to meet and exceed current industry practices and expectations.
  • Orchestrate camera, lens, lights, and motion to create visual aesthetics.
  • Become actively involved in BU research or suggest new avenues for exploration.
  • Build a strong and distinctive showreel through collaborative and individual production.
  • Take advantage of opportunities with RedBalloon, an award-winning professional production unit based in the Faculty of Media and Communication.
  • Benefit from regular guest lectures from industry professionals.
  • Graduate with an accredited degree from the International Moving Image Society (IMIS).
  • Receive an ARRI Certified Training for Camera Systems certificate alongside the Masters degree.

  • Students must complete a health and safety risk assessment to participate in these activities.
  • Students with disabilities or conditions that might affect their ability to participate fully or safely should contact the Additional Learning Support (ALS) service.
  • The university provides all the necessary equipment and facilities for students to undertake their work.
  • It is recommended that all Cinematography students purchase a camera assistant's bag and contents before commencing the course, at a minimum cost of £400.
  • Production costs can vary depending on the student's project, but the focus of the course is on developing learning, and projects are vehicles for that to flourish.
  • The university provides all the necessary equipment and facilities for students to undertake their work.

Additional Costs:

  • It is recommended that all Cinematography students purchase a camera assistant’s bag and contents before commencing the course and this will cost a minimum of £400 in total.
  • Additional costs that are not covered by the tuition fee include:
  • Laptops, tablets and mobile devices and any software used on personal devices.
  • Accommodation and living costs.
  • Textbooks, general stationery and other supplies.
  • Clothing or equipment costs required for your placement if this is part of your course of study.
  • SportBU membership.
  • While all aspects of the programme, including required field trips, are included in the fee, additional, optional or extra curricula activities may be available for which a student contribution is required.
  • International (not Rep. of Ireland) students need to pay a non-refundable deposit of £5,000 to secure their place on a postgraduate course.
