This online program provides individuals interested in regional and local history with the chance to earn an award from a top UK university recognized for its expertise in this field. The program focuses on the history of the North of England from the Viking Age to the Victorian industrial era, but the skills learned are applicable to regional and local studies broadly. The program is comprised of three modules:
The North: The Making of a Region, 1000-1500
This module explores the emergence of northern England as a region from the last days of the Northumbrian kingdom to the formation of the Anglo-Scottish border. Students will investigate ecclesiastical history, including the twelfth-century monastic revival, as well as social, economic, and cultural themes. Primary sources include chronicles, legal material, ecclesiastical records, place-names, and medieval buildings. Assessment is through a reflective report and an essay.
Regional and Local Economies and Societies, 1780-1914
This module delves into the social and economic changes of the modern age. Students will work with various primary sources, including parish registers, census tables, tithe records, enclosure acts, agricultural statistics, surveys, reports, trade directories, newspapers, and oral testimonies. The module focuses on developing online learning and discussion skills and understanding the role of regional and local studies in historical research. Assessment is through a reflective report and an essay.
Independent Research Project in Regional and Local History
This final module culminates the program with an individually supervised research project. Students will choose a specialist field, define and formulate a research topic, identify relevant primary sources, and write a project report of approximately 5000 words.
Teaching:
The program is delivered online with access to a variety of learning materials, including primary sources. Students engage in text-based discussions with other students via the online learning platform and receive one-to-one supervision for their independent project.
Other:
- The program is based in Lancaster University’s Regional Heritage Centre, which promotes and celebrates the rich social and cultural heritage of North West England.
- Students will require access to a computer and reliable internet access. The University provides financial support to students who lack the required IT equipment or broadband support.

Entry Requirements:
- Academic Requirements:
- 2:1 Hons degree (UK or equivalent) in History or a relevant subject.
- Applicants with degrees in other subjects or without a university degree will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Applicants with relevant experience through personal research, membership of local history societies, and volunteering in heritage organizations are encouraged to demonstrate their enthusiasm for regional/local history in their personal statement.
- English Language Requirements:
- Applicants may be required to provide a recognized English language qualification depending on their nationality and previous education.
- The general requirement is an IELTS (Academic) Test with an overall score of at least 6.5, and a minimum of 5.5 in each element of the test.
