Program Overview
The MSc Marine Engineering program offers a comprehensive curriculum covering marine engineering principles, teamwork, and research skills. Students engage in instructional modules, undertake a group project enhancing industry connections, and complete an individual dissertation (MSc only). Graduates are equipped for careers in various marine and related industries, including marine engineering design, surveying, and project management.
Program Outline
Outline:
The MSc Marine Engineering program consists of three components:
- Instructional modules
- Group project
- Individual project (MSc only)
Group Project:
Students work in groups of three to five people for 10 weeks to address a practical engineering problem. They present their report to a panel of industrial experts. This project enhances teamwork and communication skills and provides valuable access to industrial contacts.
Individual Project (MSc only):
MSc students undertake an individual dissertation on a topic of their interest. The aim is to develop research skills and combine aspects learned from other modules. Students carry out work into a particular topic and prepare a dissertation.
Assessment:
Assessment methods vary depending on the module. Some modules use coursework-only assessment, while others combine coursework with a final exam.
Teaching:
The program is delivered through formal lectures, tutorials, and laboratory experiments. Guest lectures and industrial visits supplement the curriculum.
Careers:
Graduates are prepared for a wide range of careers in the marine and related industries, including:
- Marine engineering machinery & system design
- Surveying
- Technical superintendence
- Project management
- Safety management
- Support services
- Classification societies
- The department has excellent teaching and research facilities, including a departmental racing yacht, a ship-model experiment tank, a towing/wave tank, a marine engine laboratory, and cutting-edge computer facilities.
