Degree Overview:
This Postgraduate Diploma in Waldorf Education and Creative Pedagogies is a part-time program jointly delivered by Bath Spa University and the Waldorf Learning Foundation. It aims to equip students with extensive knowledge of Waldorf Education and creative pedagogies, fostering both creative teaching and teaching for creativity. The program emphasizes a blend of residential and online sessions, allowing students to apply theory to practice while maintaining work-life balance. Upon graduation, students receive professional accreditation and a portfolio demonstrating expertise in the Waldorf Teacher Standards.
Outline:
The Postgraduate Diploma is structured as a part-time program, focusing on supporting and "incubating" creativity within the context of Waldorf Education. The program is delivered over two trimesters, encompassing two modules:
- Creative Environments: This module explores theoretical and philosophical perspectives related to creative environments and pedagogies, policy and practice, including Waldorf Education. It also examines local, national, and international perspectives, critically analyzing concepts like equity and social justice, wellbeing, and sustainability.
- Policy and Creative Practice: This module delves into the practical application of creative pedagogies within Waldorf Education. It covers topics such as educational practice from generative principles, creative curriculum design, responding to an anthropology of childhood, philosophical perspectives on creativity, and practical skills for creative practice both indoors and outdoors. The program incorporates a unique approach to learning through experiential Landcraft Retreats. These two-day retreats, hosted at the Steiner Academy Hereford (the only state-funded Steiner/Waldorf school in the UK), offer immersive experiences in craft and community. Where demand exists, Landcraft Retreats are also offered in global regional hubs, providing opportunities for students to engage with local communities.
Assessment:
Each academic module is assessed through coursework, requiring students to submit a written assignment alongside a critically reflective Professional Practice Portfolio. The portfolio may include:
- Creative artefacts/project work
- A practice case study
- Examples of planning, teaching, and assessment
Teaching:
Modules are delivered through a combination of online lectures, seminars, and tutorials. The program also incorporates experiential Landcraft Retreats, offering immersive experiences in craft and community. Sessions are led by Course Leaders and visiting tutors who are specialists in Waldorf Education and creative pedagogy. Self-directed artistic and/or creative practice is also an integral part of the learning process.
Careers:
Upon graduation, students become fully qualified Waldorf Education professionals with a unique set of skills for facilitating creativity in education. The Professional Practice Portfolio, demonstrating expertise in the Waldorf Teaching Standards, enhances employability.
Other:
The program upholds the professional and progressive standards of Waldorf Education while actively referencing a diversity of research and practice in creative pedagogies worldwide. It also emphasizes the development of indispensable digital skills through access to the Adobe Creative Suite, making Bath Spa University one of only three Adobe Creative Campuses in the UK.
