Program Outline

Degree Overview:

The Genetics, Genomics, and Bioinformatics PhD program at UAB is designed to prepare students for careers in research in academia, industry, medicine, and more. The program focuses on the emerging approach to healthcare known as precision medicine. Students will gain hands-on experience in state-of-the-art molecular techniques, learning about gene structure, expression, and function in diverse experimental systems. They will study cellular organelles, cells, and tissues from a variety of model organisms such as mice, Drosophila, Caenorhabditis elegans, Zebrafish, and human samples. The program also emphasizes collaboration with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty, as well as networking with biological scientists at UAB and the Hudson Alpha Institute of Biotechnology.

Teaching:

The program emphasizes hands-on experience in state-of-the-art molecular techniques. Students will collaborate with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty. They will also have the opportunity to work with program leadership and mentors in both classroom and experimental settings.

Careers:

The program prepares students for careers in research in academia, industry, medicine, and more.

Other:
