The J. Frank Barefield, Jr. Entrepreneurship Program at UAB is designed to teach students how to turn their ideas into businesses. The program aims to prepare students to be entrepreneurs who can adapt to change, solve problems, and thrive in various environments. The curriculum emphasizes finding the right problem to solve and then developing a viable business solution.
Teaching:
The program includes required courses such as The Entrepreneurial Mindset, Entrepreneurial Strategy and Operations, and The Entrepreneurial Engagement Seminar. Students also take core business classes covering marketing, finance, management, and more. Public Speaking is included to develop pitch skills.
Other:
The program offers hands-on experience through internships with local startups, participation in extracurricular programs exploring business ventures, and directed studies in entrepreneurship. The program has a workspace with hi-tech equipment in Innovation Depot, a startup facility for technology companies in Birmingham, AL. Students benefit from alliances with the Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the Innovation Depot, and other organizations.
