Program Overview
The UAB Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) program offers both entry-level and post-professional tracks in occupational therapy. Entry-level students pursue licensure, while post-professional therapists enhance their skills for leadership roles. The program features concentrations in general occupational therapy, low vision rehabilitation, and healthcare quality and safety, and is offered in both on-campus and online formats. Graduates are eligible to sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy® exam.

Degree Overview:
The Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) program at UAB is a clinical doctorate program designed for both entry-level students and licensed occupational therapists.
- Entry-Level Track: This track is for students with at least an undergraduate degree who wish to become licensed occupational therapists. The curriculum covers topics such as human anatomy, research ethics, experiment design, group theory, common diagnoses addressed by occupational therapists, kinesiology, and more. Upon completion, students meet the educational requirements to sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy® exam.
- Post-Professional Tracks: These tracks are for licensed occupational therapists who are already working in the profession. The program develops expertise in program evaluation, advanced therapy services, professional leadership skills, and more. Core courses cover fundamental theory, healthcare policy, research design, management, and higher education. Electives include Foundations in Treatment of Visual Impairment from Brain Injury, Program Evaluation, and Global Health in OT. Graduates can pursue leadership roles in advocacy and academia.
Careers:
Graduates of the entry-level track are eligible to sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy® exam, which is required for licensure. Graduates of the post-professional tracks can use their advanced knowledge and skills to pursue leadership roles in advocacy and academia.
