Degree Overview:
The Master of Science in Data Science (MScDS) is a 2-year program designed to equip students with a strong foundation in data science research and application. The program aims to prepare students for careers as researchers and leaders in the field of data science at various levels, including regional, national, and global. The MScDS program offers flexibility, allowing students to choose between an application-oriented or research-oriented path. Students can opt for the Graduate Project option, focusing on practical applications, or the Graduate Thesis option, emphasizing research. Regardless of the chosen path, graduates will develop essential skills in data analytics, critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills, making them highly competitive in the data science job market or for pursuing further research. Canada's Big Data Consortium estimates a shortage of 14,000 to 19,000 professionals with deep analytical skills and a shortage of 150,000 data literate managers and analysts in 2018. This gap continues to widen. Graduates of the MScDS program are well-prepared for various data science roles, including:
- Data Scientists: In large private or public organizations.
- Data Analysts: In areas such as software development, business intelligence, medical/health research, and data management.
- Strategic Analysis Managers: In policy-making bodies of government and organizations.
