Program Overview


This two-year part-time Integrative Medicine fellowship provides physicians with a comprehensive curriculum, including didactic instruction and clinical experiences. It prepares them for the American Board of Integrative Medicine board examination and board certification. The fellowship is open to graduates of accredited residency programs, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Graduates may pursue a Master's degree by completing additional graduate courses.

Degree Overview:

This is a two-year, part-time remote fellowship in Integrative Medicine offered by Thomas Jefferson University's Department of Integrative Medicine & Nutritional Sciences and The Marcus Institute of Integrative Health. It provides flexibility for working professionals while offering a comprehensive curriculum and access to excellent medical faculty. The fellowship is approved by the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) to meet the requirements of the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM).


Teaching:

  • Didactic Phase:
  • Curriculum based on core knowledge content of Integrative Medicine using ABOIM exam content areas as a foundation.
  • Designed for working professionals, utilizing synchronous and asynchronous methods of instruction and communication.
  • Primarily asynchronous didactic work with scheduled live discussion and events.
  • Live events are recorded for those unable to attend live, but in-person attendance is strongly recommended.
  • Highlights include:
  • Learning from faculty trained in both conventional and integrative practices.
  • Attending monthly live events including Journal Club, Grand Rounds, and Clinical Conference sessions.
  • Learning and participating in the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program.
  • Participating in the Foundations in Mind-Body Medicine graduate course.
  • Participating in the Foundations in Integrative Nutrition graduate course.
  • Participating in the Advanced Concepts in Integrative Nutrition course.
  • Participating in courses in the Advanced Practice Certificate in Integrative Health Education & Leadership (Foundations in Integrative Health Education; Integrative Developmental Model for Wellness and Leadership; Integrative Health Education & Leadership Practicum).
  • Clinical Phase:
  • Fellows must participate in 40 hours of clinical time during the fellowship program.
  • Approved clinical experiences include a wide variety of integrative health practices.

Other:

  • The fellowship is open to graduates of an ACGME-accredited residency program, as well as licensed nurse practitioners and Physicians Assistants.
  • Physician applicants must be board-certified in their area of specialty, or plan to board certify during the fellowship training.
  • The fellowship is open to any physician medical specialty and not limited to any subsets, e.g., primary care.
  • Applicants interested in pursuing the Master's degree as part of the remote fellowship experience must also complete a separate application for the Master's program.
  • Academic credit is not awarded for the fellowship unless fellows are also enrolled in the Master of Science in Integrative Health Sciences program.
  • Fellows interested in obtaining the Master's degree will need to take an additional four graduate courses to satisfy program requirements.
  • Admission to the Master of Science program does not guarantee acceptance into the fellowship program track.
  • The Marcus Institute of Integrative Health, Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health, includes two full-service clinics for medical consultations, a unique pharmacy-certified micronutrient infusion center; a wellness center specializing in fitness and mindfulness programs; a state-of-the-art imaging facility that includes MRI, fMRI, and PET imaging.
  • The Marcus Institute sees a wide range of patients and offers chronic illness care, preventive medicine, and numerous wellness services.
  • Our physicians are credentialed by Jefferson and they have advanced integrative medicine training in a wide range of approaches, including functional medicine, mind-body therapies, nutritional therapies and natural remedies, body work.
  • The Marcus Institute has one of the largest Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programs in the country and a robust research program with seven active clinical trials and multiple ongoing research projects.
