Atmospheric Science, BS
Program Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Sciences program offers a comprehensive understanding of meteorology and climate science, with a focus on tropical meteorology and oceanography. Students gain knowledge of atmospheric processes, interactions with oceans and continents, and develop skills for careers in research, forecasting, and environmental consulting. The program also prepares students for graduate study or teaching in environmental science or physics.
Program Outline
Degree Overview:
The Bachelor of Science program in Atmospheric Sciences is designed for students interested in studying meteorology or climate science. The program provides students with an in-depth knowledge of the physical characteristics, motions and processes of air; as well as the interactions of this protective layer with the underlying oceans and continents. The undergraduate program emphasizes a systems approach, combining traditional atmospheric sciences with emerging fields. In particular, the program focuses on the fields of tropical meteorology and oceanography that are directly linked to the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding coastal regions where the university is strategically located.
Outline:
The atmospheric science degree requires a minimum of 120 credits:
- 2 - Core Curriculum Program
- 2 - First-Year Seminars (when applicable)
- 60 - Atmospheric Sciences Core Courses
- 18 - Atmospheric Sciences Career Track Courses
- Full-time, first time in college students are required to take the first-year seminars.
Careers:
When you reach graduation, you’ll have the skills to take on careers that include:
- Research Scientist
- Atmospheric Scientist
- Junior Marine Scientist
- Junior Technologist
- Meteorologist
- Environmental Consultant
- Data Scientist in Weather, Climate, and Air Quality
Other:
The atmospheric science faculty seeks to provide a high quality educational experience for students majoring in atmospheric science in preparation for industrial or government positions, and for graduate study. The program is also designed for those planning to teach environmental science or physics at the 8-12 level, or who need atmospheric science knowledge and skills relevant to future studies in the sciences. The student who wishes to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree in Atmospheric Science may do so by following one of the two curriculum plans referred to as concentrations:
- Atmospheric Science
- Weather Broadcasting
