Program Overview
The Master's in Special Education prepares educators for initial teaching certification and/or educational diagnostician certification. The program combines theory and pedagogy from English learner education and special education, providing advanced expertise in culturally and linguistically responsive special education services for students with both high-incidence and low-incidence disabilities. Students gain knowledge in assessing needs, fostering learning, and developing behavior intervention plans. Additionally, opportunities are available to earn Educational Diagnostician Certification and a Low-Incidence Disabilities Transcripted Certificate.
Program Outline
Members of this program gain advanced expertise in culturally and linguistically responsive special education services to students with both high-incidence and low-incidence disabilities. Theory and pedagogy from English learner education and special education are combined.

- Demonstrate knowledge of individuals with disabilities
- Evaluate the needs of individuals with disabilities
- Demonstrate knowledge of fostering learning and development for individuals with disabilities
- Demonstrate knowledge of foundations of special education and professional roles and responsibilities of the special education educator
- Develop a behavior intervention/change plan

In conjunction with the Special Education Master's Degree, opportunities are available to earn additional credentials:
- Educational Diagnostician Certification: Educational diagnosticians are special education professionals who assess and diagnose children with learning difficulties.
- MS in Special Education with Educational Diagnostician Certificate and Low-Incidence Disabilities Transcripted Certificate
