Program Outline

Degree Overview:

Enhance your degree with studies in life science and learn more about everything from the influence of genetics to how organisms interact with the environment. UNT's minor in Biological Sciences provides a foundation for a scientific understanding of life. Students seeking a major in Chemistry, Physics, Kinesiology, Math or Psychology may want to pursue a minor in Biology to help them prepare for a career in health care or as a pre-medicine degree. Our alumni include many distinguished researchers and university professors who are dedicated to high-quality teaching and research.

Careers:

This minor can be valuable for Science majors as well as students interested in Health Services, Environmental Philosophy, Art or Design or even Media Arts. Advanced electives in the minor are selected in consultation with an advisor in the Department of Biological Science.

Other:

UNT's minor in biological sciences offers flexible options that deepen your scientific knowledge in the areas that can help you further your career or prepare you for graduate studies. The Life Sciences Complex, which has Gold-level LEED certification for sustainability, is a living lab with open research spaces that feature rooftop greenhouses. UNT Career Center helps students find learning opportunities and real-world work experience through over 4,000 employers. The Teach North Texas Program helps students interested in teaching science achieve teacher certification. We also administer a joint program with the UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth that allows you to combine college and medical school. This saves you time and money by reducing the usual eight-year program to seven. Through a generous grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the UNT-HHMI Undergraduate Research Program offers current UNT junior and senior biology and biochemistry majors the opportunity to engage in a PAID research experience in the laboratory of an active UNT researcher for up to one year.
