Degree Overview:

A Creative and Critical Practice PhD at Sussex develops your practice-led research in creative media production alongside critically engaged writing. Your research might involve a variety of practical approaches including video, photography and imaging, interactive media, sound, social media or process-based performative methods. You can also participate in the Sussex Humanities Lab, which is dedicated to developing and expanding interdisciplinary research at the cutting edge of digital humanities and digital media. In Brighton, you’ll join a vibrant community for the arts and creative industries.

Entry Requirements:

  • Degree Requirements:
  • UK Students:
  • Normally, a Merit (average of 60% overall) in a Masters degree and an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree.
  • International Students: The equivalent of a UK Masters degree, which means completing some academic study beyond a Bachelors degree.
  • The specific undergraduate degree requirement varies by country.
  • Subject-Specific Requirements:
  • All students must submit a portfolio or examples of their practical work, such as digital/scanned images or film/video/sound clips.
  • This should ideally relate to the proposed research and be in an easily downloadable format. Links to online practice work are also acceptable.
  • The qualification should be in a subject relevant to the chosen area of research.
  • Students with other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing may also be considered.

Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • IELTS (Academic): High level (6.5 overall, including at least 6.0 in each component).
  • Scores are valid for two years from the test date.
  • Alternative English Language Qualifications:
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate in English (CAE):
  • 169 overall, including at least 162 in each skill.
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 169 overall, including at least 162 in each skill.
  • LanguageCert International ESOL SELT: High level (International ESOL SELT B2 with a minimum of 39 in each component).
  • Pearson PTE Academic: High level (62 overall, including at least 59 in all four skills).
  • TOEFL (iBT): High level 88 overall, including at least 20 Listening, 19 in Reading, 21 in Speaking, 23 in Writing.
