Program Overview

The program offers research degrees in translation studies, with thesis or combined extended translation and thesis options. Supervision is available in various areas, including historical linguistics and translation from the 18th century onwards. Expertise in multiple languages, including English, French, German, and Chinese, is provided. Graduates pursue careers in academia, civil service, cultural industries, and translation.

Program Outline

Assessment:

Assessment may be either through submission of a thesis (which should be not more than 100,000 for the case of PhD or 60,000 words in the case of MPhil), or through a combined extended translation and thesis option. The extended translation may be of material belonging to any genre, subject to prior approval. The accompanying thesis must engage with, and contribute to the development of, translation theory.

Careers:

Many of our postgraduates have chosen academic careers and are currently in full-time posts in the UK. Others have moved into the civil service, the cultural industries, the media, publishing, teaching or translation.

We offer research degree supervision in all areas of translation studies, including historical linguistics and translation studies from the 18th century to the present. We can offer expert supervision for projects involving English and the following languages: French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Serbian, Croatian and Dutch.
