  • The scope and nature of environmental management Ethical, legal and financial reasons for maintaining and promoting environmental management.

  • Reasons for implementing an environmental management system, key features and content of an effective EMS (e.g.
  • ISO14001).
  • Assessing environmental aspects and impacts
  • The key sources of environmental information used during environmental impact assessments, the principles and practice of environmental impact assessments.
  • Control of emissions to air
  • The principles of air quality standards, the main types of air emissions and control measures available to reduce them.
  • Control of contamination of water sources
  • The importance of water quality for life, the main sources of water pollution and control measures available to reduce contamination.
  • Control of waste and land use
  • The importance of minimising waste and the principles of waste management, the risks associated with contaminated land.
  • Sources and use of energy and energy efficiency
  • Benefits and limitations of alternative sources of energy, the importance of energy efficiency and controls measures available.
  • Control of environmental noise
  • The potential sources of environmental noise and methods available to control them.
  • Planning for and dealing with environmental emergencies
  • Measures that need to be in place to ensure the emergency preparedness of an organisation.

Assessment:

  • Assessment is by means of an online open book exam at the end of the course and a practical environmental review of the student’s own workplace.

Teaching:

  • Attendance is one day each week for 8 consecutive weeks.
  • As well as sessions covering the syllabus below, sessions covering exam technique and revision are included.
