The MA Mental Health and Wellbeing in Education program equips educators to promote the mental health and wellbeing of students and staff. Through discussions, research, and assignments, students explore approaches to research, mental health principles, effective practices, and critical perspectives on mental health and wellbeing. The program enhances knowledge and enables students to impact their educational settings through research-based practices.

This MA Mental Health and Wellbeing in Education award aims to equip students to become a change agent in their own educational setting by supporting and promoting the positive mental health and wellbeing of young people and staff.

Exploring Approaches to Research

They will critically examine examples of research approaches and their appropriateness for different purposes. They will then explore a range of data collection methods such as questionnaires, interviews, observations and evaluate the strengths and limitations of each. Students will have an opportunity to trial a method to evaluate it in greater depth.
Introduction to Mental Health and Wellbeing

Recent research indicates that 1 in 10 children are experiencing significant mental health problems with two in five young people scoring above thresholds for emotional problems, conduct issues or hyperactivity. There is also an increased incidence of adult students' mental health issues in further and higher education and a need for staff in all of these contexts to increase their awareness and knowledge in order to inform practice. You will consider, share, discuss and critically reflect upon these areas in relation to your own education practice and context. It is anticipated that the learning from this module will deepen your understanding and impact on your own values. You will be supported by a wide range of literature and research which will help you to reflect on your own practice and context.
Mental Health and Wellbeing Practice

The module will draw upon a range of local, regional and national expertise in mental health and wellbeing practice in education. You will draw upon the knowledge and understanding that you have developed so far, with reference to the relevant literature, in order to critically examine and evaluate different practices as well as critically reflect upon your own educational practice and context. The module will provide you with opportunities to network, share good practice and develop collaborative working with other organisations and external agencies.
Critical Approaches to Mental Health and Wellbeing
You will consider philosophical perspectives on mental health and wellbeing and international approaches and practices. It is anticipated that the learning from this module will deepen your understanding and impact on your own values. You will be supported by a wide range of literature and research which will help you to reflect on your own practice and context.
Mental Health and Wellbeing in Education Dissertation

The focus for the enquiry should be based upon a problem or issue arising from a professional context or a current issue in the field of mental health and wellbeing in education.
